Packing the Perfect Picnic Bag

What we bring, what we wear, and why a woven straw basket is always worth it.

A good picnic is less about planning and more about slowing down. Still, a little preparation goes a long way. Here is how we pack for an unhurried afternoon outdoors.

Start with the right bag

A roomy straw basket is our go-to. It is light, it keeps its shape, and it looks lovely in every photo. Line it with a cotton tea towel to keep crumbs contained.

What goes inside

  • A large cotton or linen blanket
  • Fresh bread, soft cheese and seasonal fruit
  • A glass bottle of water or lemonade
  • A small knife, napkins and a bag for rubbish
  • A paperback, just in case

What to wear

Pick breathable fabrics that move with you: a loose white dress, an embroidered blouse with wide trousers, or a cotton co-ord. Add a wide-brim hat and you are ready for the sun.

Leave the place as you found it, and stay until the light turns golden.
